Yumbe Medical and Surgical Camp

Location: Yumbe District, Uganda

Project Goal:

  • To perform 1,000 free hernia surgeries, targeting 250 patients per week.

 

Background: The Yumbe Project is a vital health initiative by UMCA Foundation aimed at providing critical medical care to the underserved communities in Yumbe, Uganda. Following the successful implementation of our first medical camp in February 2024, which treated 521 patients and performed 111 surgeries for various conditions, the need for further medical intervention was identified.

 

 

 

 

Objectives:

  • To address the high incidence of hernias among the local population caused by malnutrition and heavy labor.
  • To provide free, life-changing surgical interventions to improve the health and well-being of the community.
  • To collaborate with Yumbe Regional Hospital and local medical teams for sustainable healthcare solutions.

Key Activities:

  1. Medical Assessments:

    • Conduct thorough medical assessments to identify patients in need of hernia surgeries.
    • Ensure pre-surgical evaluations and necessary diagnostic tests are completed.
  2. Surgical Operations:

    • Perform 1,000 hernia surgeries over a period of four weeks, with a target of 250 surgeries per week.
    • Utilize the expertise of skilled surgeons, anesthetists, and support staff to ensure high-quality medical care.
  3. Post-Operative Care:

    • Provide comprehensive post-operative care and follow-up to ensure successful recovery.
    • Educate patients on post-surgery care and health maintenance.
  4. Community Engagement:

    • Conduct awareness campaigns on the importance of nutrition and preventive healthcare.
    • Engage with community leaders to ensure widespread participation and support.

 

 

Resources Required:

  • Medical Supplies:
    • Hernia repair kits, surgical instruments, anesthesia, and post-operative care materials.
  • Logistics:
    • Transportation and accommodation for the medical team.
  • Personnel:
    • Surgeons, anesthetists, nurses, and support staff.
  • Operational Costs:
    • General care, allowances for medical team, and administrative expenses.

Estimated Cost:

  • The estimated cost per surgery is approximately $150, covering all medical supplies, logistical support, and personnel expenses.

Expected Impact:

  • Improved health and quality of life for 1,000 individuals suffering from hernias.
  • Reduced economic burden on families by alleviating the health issues caused by untreated hernias.
  • Strengthened healthcare infrastructure through collaboration with local medical professionals and institutions.
